Are you and your child ready for the first day of ‘big school’?
Now that the summer holidays are coming to an end, this can only mean one thing the start of a new school year. But for some younger children it’s the start of moving from Pre School to Primary School. Although this can be a time of excitement, it can also mean that it can be tinged with a little apprehension about starting ‘big school’.Below are some useful tips on both your child getting ready to start Primary School and starting their First Day of School.
Before starting Primary School:
As the start of primary school nears, try reading books and stories about starting big school.Try to encourage your child to ask questions and express their ideas and feelings about starting primary school.Play ‘School at home’ by letting your child have fun trying on the uniform and packing his or her school bag and lunchbox like they would on each of the school days.Looking at how your child will get to and from school, why not take a drive or walk past the school as this will help your child familiarise themselves with the school building and how it looks.
First Day of ‘Big School’:
Start your child’s first day of school with a good, healthy nutritious breakfast.Make sure to arrive on time as this will set them up for the day ahead.Once you and your child arrive at school, have a brief a chat with the teacher or assistant upon arrival, this can help to alleviate anxiety and will also be very beneficial for your child too.Help your child to hang up his or her coat and also help them find their seat in the classroom.Confirm with your child where he or she will be collected at the end of the day and by whom.Say hello to other children and parents that are in the classroom, this will help support your child with introductions to all the new faces in the room.Make your goodbyes short and reassure your child that you will be there to collect them at the end of the school day.
