Now that Summer is here, it is important to keep your children safe when in the sun. Babies and Children have very sensitive skin and they are at high risk in getting Sun-burnt. Below are some steps in reducing the risk and keeping your children safe when out in the sun and heat.

1: Preventing Sunburn

If your child gets sun-burnt, here are a few tips to prevent UV damage and sunburn:

  • Use sunscreen

  • Cover up with clothing

  • Seek shade

2: Sunscreen

You can protect your little ones’ skin by using sunscreen or sun cream that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher and protects against both types of UV rays in sunlight

  • Putting on Sunscreen: Always cover exposed parts of children’s skin with sun cream such as areas especially the face, ears, neck, nose, lips and tops of the feed.

  • Reapplying Sunscreen: When it comes to re-applying sunscreen this should be done every 2 hours while your child is outside, it also should be reapplied after swimming too.

3: Treating Sunburn-babies and children

Children can get sun-burnt very quickly. Below are some things that you can do to help them feel more comfortable:

  • Bring them into the shade

  • Give them plenty of cold water to drink.

  • Cool their skin using facecloths soaked in cool water.

4: Staying in the Shade

  • Keep young children and babies in the shade and out of the direct sunlight. Also, use a sunshade on your buggy or pram to protect against the UV rays.

5: Sun Protective Clothing

  • You can also protect your child’s skin from UV ray’s by covering them with clothes. For babies, you should dress them in loose-fitting outfits that cover both their arms and legs..

6: Sunglasses

  • When it comes to protecting your children’s eyes from UV rays you can protect them with sunglasses.
